What's the Dealio with initrd, etcfstab, initrd.img inittab, vmlinuz, grub and parbreastions 520Michael Heiming Douglas Mayne gentlemen - gentlemen - YES...Douglas is correct - My HDD is thrashing quite alot (while in Linux) - it still does NOT in win98 - but that may be because it's parbreastions are occupying the outer part of the disk (80GB) -- I just think it's because it always wants to jump fromusr tovar tohome , etc...Trying to install packages, web-browsing-posting and file-management., use Konsole. You know it gets to the point *sometimes* lately, since I'm trying to esplore and do more in Linux, where what I'm typing doesn't appear for a full 1 or 2 seconds (frustrating, because the cursor is not where you think it is)...like a delayed typing - and then also sending the message it kinda hangs...like real bigtime latency. My Cable conn is 8mpbs-1mbps - and I've realized those speeds on rare occbuttion (must be an awesome server, like GRC.com's "Security Now" MP3 programs) What's the Dealio with initrd, etcfstab, initrd.img inittab, vmlinuz, grub and parbreastions 521 On Fri, 24 Feb 2006 14:24:23 -0800, iforone Inline: The answer is partly mixed in with the question. Just a notice to make sure a comment isn't overlooked. You should have... See the thing is too, I know all the lightweight apps for doze (win98 - I hate bloat like XPoop...offended?, apologies, but it's IMO - I never installed any bloatish stuff on 98 (Ok, once I installed AutoCAD 2000 - and it ran ok, believe it or not), -- but it's totally stripped down 98, ...no java, no jscript, no activeX, no vbs, no IE, and certainly no hidden Interent caches, like Content.IE - I even broke the history ;) -- plus I have a Batch file (very simplistic) that wipes cache and stuff on demand. Yet I can watch DVDs using 3 diff software players (albeit, can't do much else while watching). I know - I know -- I NEED MORE RAM !!!! -- unless I learn how to live "almost" entirely in the terminal for now. Michael - do you have any suggestions for my PCMCIA woes ?? Kernel woes ?? I'll even take Window Manager -- usage help (howto fire it up) Thank you
