If you want to test things try my hashlib, written in portable standard C. At present its table size is limited to about 8 x 10e6 entries, but you can easily change that by adding about 8 entries to the primetbl at about line 90 (instructions in the source), which will increase the capacity by 256 times. The testing code makes entries of 4 byte length, which together with the pointer in the table requires 8 bytes per entry. This will get the memory usage will up in the 6 gigabyte range, and all you have to do is run the testing software with the appropriate command line parameters. Then see what your virtual memory system does.

hashtest -h (or any other non-numeric parameter) gives instructions. Tests that can suppress hshkill show up O(N) operation of free, resulting in O(N*N) program exit timing. So it can show up quite a lot about your system performance.
