For those that want a smoother Unix experience than... I really do not see that, e.g., Windows XP is more user friendly and more efficient than current releases of Linux. I have Windows XP Home on my old machine, and XP is so brain-damaged that it does not run both processors. It is true that it does not claim to, but AFAIK, all current versions of Linux, certainly since 2000, have been able to do that. The old machine also runs Red Hat Linux 9 (dual boot setup), and I believe it may be even more user-friendly. My new (as of March 2004) machine runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 ES and it is, if anything, more user friendly than Windows XP Home. It contains all manner of programs missing from Windows XP: a compilation-profiling-debugging system for various languages (though I mainly use C++), all manner of servers (I use mainly sendmail, ssh, bind-named), several office suites to suit your taste, all at no extra cost. IMAO, they are almost equally user-friendly, with perhaps recent releases of the GNU-Linux system having a slight edge in general, and a great edge where development, profiling, testing, debugging, etc., are concerned. -- .~.
