Defrag your XP system. If you have about 10 gig of free space then you should have enough room to install any linux.

I would create the free-unformatted-unknown space before installing any linux.

I would download-burn the iso image here to shrink your current install.

start of your distribution research.

You can run a live cd which lets you test drive linux without installing on your system. Downside is live cds run slooow because they run from cd.

I'll recommend Knoppix as a live cd and Mandriva Linux for a harddrive install.

Want to see some install screenshots.

Some basic Linux 101

Application crossreference charts.

For a Mandriva Download Mirror selection

click proceed to step 2

Pick a main mirror click check box for mirror click proceed to step 3, cut-paste into your browser and change it from somethinge like

(mirror)-pub-linux-mandrakelinux-official-2006.0 to (mirror)-pub-linux-distributions-mandrivalinux-official-iso-2006.0-i586

You would then need:

or get dvd files.

You need to verify the sha1 or md5 checksum before burning to verify you have a good download.

If you like it, you might consider joining the Mandriva Club so they can have some money to pay the staff that developes the distribution.
