On Sunday 19 March 2006 20:26, (PeteCresswell) stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...: Both, really...

Mostly 'because of some inherent resistance in Linux'. Linux has a proper 'protection model' with respect to processes, files, and devices. Also, Linux applications lack some of the inherently bad features that many of MS's applications abound with, things like ActiveX, and the ability to download and install tightly bound extensions to IE (great for phishing expeditions), MS-Word's macro abilities, OE's automagical opening of some attachments, and the inclusion of unprotected and open server processes as part of the default MS-Windows installation. Did you know that home versions of MS-Windows XP include an *unpatched* version of IIS that can be attacked by the Code Red worm? And did you know that there is an open SMTP relay also installed by default? The spammers love this. Find a random MS-Windows XP box, break it with Code Red, then set it up as a Zombie Box and relay spam through it. Sendmail *by default* won't randomly relay mail. One has to go though some deliberate fussing with config files to open it up.
