Its a shame 'Linux' didn't work for, I say its a shame because all the core things you mention you us your system for, Linux would be the ideal choice. Windows if you are not able to set up the security side, will hit you in the wallet, banking on line, trading in shares, from a Windows system. Please look at getting am expert to configure Windows security for you, and yes pay a retainer to ensure that your system is kept safe.

I make these comments, as your post indicates that you lack IT skills, if you did you would not need to phone your ISP to configure your internet, again if you don't understand the basics you security is at risk on a Windows system.

It would have been helpfull had you posted the distro you tried, your approach of using a seperate HD was good, but did you penny pinch on the distro, I would reccomend SuSe 9.3, and 'crossover office' to get that special spreadsheet up and running you mentioned.

It could well be that a nix sytem is not for you, if it isn't great, but for what you are using you PC for be paronide about your security.
