Why I left Linux for Windows. 2148On Fri, 25 Aug 2006 10:50:52 -0500, JEDIDIAH I don't quite believe either points of view as they are quite too rigid and there are too many variables when it comes to making such grand and sweeping statements. There is ways to make money from Linux also, such as hosting, firewall software-hardware sales and many other uses such as complete packages for file serving, network traffic monitoring etc. and if you're selling the hardware at the same time as configuring the servers for the clientele, you're making a double whammy in that you make a bit on hardware and also the consulting-setup fees payable for your time configuring the network, so I disagree that there is no way to make money from Linux. I agree that we all need to eat and I can see either side of your arguments here, but from both perspectives, we all need to pay bills, but at the same time, with that atbreastude (of relegating Linux to a hobby), Linux shall never get anywhere. You're right that a lot of people see it as "free" software, but its also about the overall sales pitch. If I said to you, I can set up your offices for you, with a different operating system, but at the same time save you about $10000 on 40 computers, yet still have a desktop with as good a functionality and usability, would you accept? Most people do. Wonder why most of the governments are now beginning to utilize Linux, especially in third-world countries. Why I left Linux for Windows. 2149 Hadron Quark Nice of you to generalise advocates as "The COLA Gang". To the contrary, increase utilisation of Linux and open standards are nothing new. Governments have taken position to use... Fact for you. The RHCE course was voted by quite a few computer magazines as the most sought-after professional certification when I.T. companies were choosing employees. Why I left Linux for Windows. 2151 Indeed. I sympathise. Linux simply hasn't the huge installed base of application software available yet to compete... Why is that? Thought no-one used it commercially and do it for free. Why is it sought after as a qualification? On another note, I can pretty much say you are wrong about your comment saying that "Capitalism and free markets are about what YOU want" only. Why I left Linux for Windows. 2150 snips On Thu, 24 Aug 2006 17:38:51 -0700, donalkfellows You mistyped "Another cross-posting Yahoo subhuman worthless piece of... Look at most of the world and most communist governments are finding a mixture of communism and capitalism to their benefit, whilst on the other side of the coin, capitalist governments offer unemployment benefits, which is most definitely NOT capitalistic in nature. So yes, "everyone else is doing the money thing". You are welcome to go on living your idealistic "free world" movement idea but in reality, it doesn't work and we all have to live by whatever means we can create a sustainable income. May I ask how you support your family or purchase your computer hardware-software if you're not "into" money, capitalism or free markets? I think you're being a little naive about it all. You know those computer magazines we all read? Here's an interesting fact for you: Those "Best Buy" products and "voting" are rigged and payed for. The computer hardware manufacturer who sends their product in for review also writes an "off the books" cheque, "for advertising" that allows them to "win" the best buy. Pretty good buy you got there, wasn't it? You bought the #1 product and guess what? It was because that particular manufacturer decided to send $2 mill instead of the usual $1 mill for that particular review. I don't just have this on good authority, I know. I have worked in computer wholesale for over 10 years and do the advertising for some pretty major hardware manufacturers and know exactly how it all works. Its all crooked my friend, from judges, to lawyers, sales, whatever. We're all in it for the dollar and thats about it. Honestly, when most people get into Linux from a business perspective, do you think they look at it from the "helping the community"-"free" angle? LOL, is all I've got to say. Regards, Christian Why I left Linux for Windows. 2153 says... snip It will, indeed, and must, because as a desktop system it simply can't compete with Windows. I'm coming back to Linux...
