Did you read the description, that came with the CD? It probably reads: "DSL is an acronym for 'Damned Small Linux'. In other words, its a distro tuned for tight space constraints. At 50 MB you can put it on a cheap 64MB usb stick and still have space for local data. email...). But of course its a very stripped down distribution. No big deal to find something missing. For the records: The up-to-date version of Debian is 14 CDs packed full of binaries. Before you complain --- Yes, there is a DVD version. And if you have access to a reasonably large pipe, the most convient installation is straight from the internet.

If you want to stay with live CDs, I'd recommend Ubuntu or the father of the trend: Knoppix. These aim to provide as much of linux as fits on a regular CD, i.e. 700MB. Also, they are known for good hardware support. Still their hardware detection is independent and different. If one does not work for you, try the other. Both of them are cheap, essentially give-away CDs.

Actually, Linux is the round peg. It's Windows that has all of those awkward corners that stick, jam, and break. But Microsoft has gotten everyone so used to breakage that they hardly notice anymore...

1.99EUR ~ 2.30USD This is the Debian distribution mentioned above. It includes OpenOffice and recent version of about every free software there is for the i86 architecture.

Note, that Debian is not the recommanded distribution for a solitary linux newbee. Although the installation procedure has improved a lot, it may save you some trouble if you have somebody handy who is already knows debian. For a smooth installation of a full scaled linux system, please turn to one of the major commercial distributions (redhat, suse, mandrake etc).

cdrecord "on the fly
Black Sun and said: attempt to mount CD burned in this way This won't work right. You didn't do mkisofs, so the CD-R was burned as the raw data of the first...

If I were you, I'd give the large DVD version of ubuntu a try (it sells for 1EUR at ebay).
