Crashdamage I used something like fvwm on Red Hat 5.0, and could barely stand it. I do not know what desktop there was anymore, but it looked sort-of like Windows, but the little and X icons at the top right of each window did nothing. Linux otherwise was so much better than Windows 95 that I kept on with it.

Red Hat 6.0 cane with GNOME and enlightenment, and I liked that a lot.

Red Hat 7.3 came with GNOME and sawfish, which was pretty good, but I liked enlightenment better, but not enough better to get and install it.

Red Hat 9, and after, seem to come with GNOME and metacity.

Now this box is running GNOME and metacity right now, with 10 windows open. That does look like a lot from a 1998 standpoint when I was running RHL 5.0 on a 64 Megabyte RAM machine. But my next machine got 512 Megabytes RAM, and the one after that got 4 Gigabytes RAM, so the %MEM, above, does not seem all that unreasonable these days.
