Try installing Linux with just the analogues of what you'd find in a base Windows install. Then install OpenOffice. Then try.

Ditto. Bear in mind that IE is fundamentally tied to MS-Windows in such a way that its dependencies are already resident in memory the second you're shown the desktop. Try Firefox on Windows, then Firefox on Linux, and give a fair comparison. Not this FUD bullpoo.

K3B under Knoppix-Debian requires that you configure a CDFS parbreastion-image before you can burn a DVD. Perhaps try this?
