Dave Uhring Simple: before posting to Usenet, I need to get linux to successfully connect to the web - a "trivial" something I and many...

Oh common now. How many of you Windows whiners know all the DOS commands? Do you know where the DOS help system is?!

There are plenty of book, many online and free, that help you get started using Linux and they are VERY easy to find - 10 years ago I ran into Linux on accident just browsing the web and found all the info I needed to get started...and guess how much easier it is now? There is just no comparison. Linux was fairly difficult to install and get working for the avereage know-nothing bunghole I was. But I RTFM and got it working - and at that time the FM was a lot harder to find and read than it is now...less users meant a lot less decent documentation.

Every starter book will show you a few basic shell commands like cd, mv, ls, etc... Most go much further and show how to use things like find, grep, awk, and other tools us sys admins use every day. Then they go on to tell you about man and info, the two best sources of information available. I learned how to write in C using the man pages almost exclusively (man strncpy). I learned how to write my own AI using nothing but other people's code and resources like citeseer that allowed me to read scientific articles and masters-doctorial thesises.

The problem isn't that the FM is hard to find or unavailable...it is that most of you whiners are just pussies that want everything handed to you on a silver platter. You want direct places to look?

`find -type d -name 'doc'` `find -type f -name '*README*'` `man man` `info`
