Why newbies don't RTFM... 4746Why newbies don't RTFM... 4749 Note that this is still true if "system" is read as being more general than just "computer system... Why newbies don't RTFM... 4747 Dave Uhring Thank you Dave for offering to help. You are correct, I did not provide information about my hardware because my original query to this... Dave Uhring Simple: before posting to Usenet, I need to get linux to successfully connect to the web - a "trivial" something I and many helpful linux gurus are "still" trying to achieve on my system, unsuccessfully so far. I am therefore forced to use another OS to connect to the web till I get linux to do it for me. Why newbies don't RTFM... 4748 On Tue, 13 Sep 2005 14:28:41 -0400, Jeff staggered into the Black Sun and said: The original problem you had was with kppp not being SUID, right? This is not... Your answer is in the same vein as the previous one: instead of "hearing" what newbies are saying, you attack and insult the messenger. And by newbies I mean those of us who have nothing but admiration for the remarkable achievements of linux and are trying to support it by trying to use it - but do not have a degree in computer science. Requiring that level of computer expertise just to use a computer may have been acceptable in the days of old main bank computers, but it really is not acceptable for the modern user of computers who just wants them to run applications efficiently. One should not need to be an expert in mechanics to drive and use a car even though in earlier days that was in fact a requirement. Fortunately, wise linux developers have done tremendous strides forward with the modern distributions - despite the objections of other linux experts who wished to keep linux obscure and a source of macho computing - and this has, not surprisingly, resulted in increased adoption rates by the user world. As some of the few remaining problems get smoothed out (and I believe that includes wireless) even more users will adopt linux. Before one learns the advanced intricacies of any OS or application, one must first have it work effortlessly for things like web access. A big thank you to linux developers for all they have already achieved.
