Wierd, SuSE 9.2 uses 650MB of RAM while idle

Why is my O-S using so much memory when it is idle? All I have is a couple of text editors open (I shut down GPDF soon after this, but it only seems to reduce memory usage by 14MB) Do one of my programs have a memory leak, and if so how do can I free up the memory with some terminal command?

Looking at the output of "ps aux" does not show any programs using significant portions of memory. The system info tool's GUI presents a conflicting report that only ~120MB of RAM is being used.

Strange....
