The start times probably correspond to when I put a DVD-R into the drive and found that I couldn't read some of the files on the disc even though they were listed in the directory. I've had this problem before: it looks as if the disc is corrupt but when the system feels like it1 it can read them all. However since trying the read the DVD I've been successfully using the drive to rip CDs. Wierd.
