X no acceptable refresh

I am hoping someone has a similar setup because I am at a bit of a loss. Installed latest Gentoo and I can't get xorg to work. I've tried xorgconfig with several different options but none of them work. It goes through and says the hardware only supports a particular resolution and refresh rate and never picks that rate.

The card is an Intel 82815 CGC Subsys: Gateway 2000.

The monitor is a samsung 17" lcd.

In the list of resolutions and rates that the server tries these don't show up. Xorg.0.log is where I am getting my info.

xorgconf doesn't work either...it won't start up...the server boots out complaining about no screens, just like it does post configuration.

I've never had this much trouble before. When gentoo tried to use a graphical installer the server stayed up but all it was was a bunch of colorful lines. I can't even get that.

I realize this is rather sparse information but still, does anyone have any ideas?
