Did you remember to a) set the authorities on your X server to permit the client to connect (xhost, xauth, or the like)? b) export the DISPLAY environment variable on the remote system, pointing it at the X server on your local system? If you use X Forwarding in your SSH connection, you won't have to worry about either the x auth or the DISPLAY envvar; both will be set properly for you. However, if you telnet into your remote system, you'll need set up xauth and DISPLAY. In that case, try this line export DISPLAY=`who am i awk '{print $6}' tr -d '()'`:0.0 in your ~-.profile file on the remote AIX system.
