So far, I haven't actually seen you mention what relevant resources you have available. I can deduce that you have access to a working computer, and guess that it's your computer. This is just a guess--no subsbreastute for you saying what is available.

buttuming that you do have a working computer, and buttuming both the working computer and nonworking computer have PATA drives, and buttuming neither have any BIOS limitations preventing the following blah blah blah...

There are a couple OBVIOUS possibilities to consider. One is to take the hard drive from the working computer and put it in the non-working computer. Another is to take the hard drive from the non-working computer and put it in the working computer.

Either of these possibilities would answer the "original" question by making it moot--simply put the relevant file on the working computer's hard drive and then do the transfer after both hard drives are in the same computer.

Now, if we had some more information about your situation and what resources you have available, then maybe we can be more helpful. Keep in mind that too much information is better than too little, in this case...
