agnula grub 137In comp.os.linux.misc, on Tue 17 January 2006 03:30, You *could* do it this way, but I imagine that your distribution CD's have a "rescue" option and this would be IMNSHO much easier to use. You won't be able to boot *from the MBR* into Linux until you correct the MBR, but your Linux system will still be there and you will be able to access it using either the boot-floppy of which you wrote or the "rescue" option from your CDs Moving to 64 bit 139 Peter T. Breuer I think you have the choice with the gnu-cc compiler. I know we had the choice with some compiler I used... That's because you don't want to put menu.lst on the boot floppy. It is not currently in the MBR but in theboot-grub directory on the appropriate parbreastion. You just want to leave it there. The boot floppy will load stage 1 and will then look into yourboot-grub directory on the hard drive for stage 2 (menu.lst) Yes, that's right - you effectively have the equivalent to the start of your MBR on the floppy, and that dioes not have a normal filesystem Again that is correct, it all stems from your confusion about what is needed on the boot floppy. You don't need a file system for the reasons given above Whilst I don't agree with your aims, they *are* achievable much more easily than you think. 1 Make the boot floppy agnula grub 138 Except that when I upgraded grub to 0.97 from 0.90 yesterday, the result was a machine that just stood there saying something... 2 Check that it works 3 Create a parbreastion to contain Windows (don't rely on Windows to respect your data when installing - it won't unless you give it a dedicated parbreastion). 4 Allow Windows to hijack the MBR and to pretend that it is the only system on your PC Moving to 64 bit 140 When I did this I recompiled and then debugged - having previously scanned for obvious extra and invalid buttumptions about pointer... 5 Use the floppy to boot into an Operating System or leave the floppy out if you want to use the erzatz O-S I suggest that you do it sooner rather than later HTH HANDY -- Robert Keep the Yule Logs burning !
