Peter T. Breuer I think you have the choice with the gnu-cc compiler. I know we had the choice with some compiler I used...

Except that when I upgraded grub to 0.97 from 0.90 yesterday, the result was a machine that just stood there saying something like "boot sector found OK on IDE 0" with much blackness and stillness following. (I ran grub-installdev-hda first, but it complained about there being "no bios code for hda15" - yes, the grub docs suck pigs trotters - so I ran grub on its own and did root (hd0,14), setup (hd0), and that seemed happy. Maybe 14 was hex and that was my mistake).

Using a hastily attached cdrom drive and an old RH 6.1 install cd, I was able to get some control back, and shucks but RH 6.1 has no lilo or anything visible on its cd, not even chroot, nor an editor, eny editor. It has useless things like chattr to its dark heart's fill. But I was able to mount the disk and run lilo and get an old 2.2 kernel installed with an imprmptu lilo.conf created with "cat", and add kernel params by hand on reboot to run sh as init, and install a NIC driver and start sshd and login remtely and FIX stuff.

Phew - I don't know if I dare try grub again. That's a P2 450. There was grub on that disk before and it was working fine. I wonder why it decided to install a new mbr that doesn't do the right tricks.

Peter
