If you're using KDE, you could try the "sidebar media player" in Konqueror. Left side has a "play-pause-stop" set of controls, a time display, and a "drag sound files here". Right side has a normal konq file manager window. Do the obvious thing to play mp3, ogg, and wav files. Works with multiple selections too, but there's no real playlist management or any way to skip from song to song.
