Yes.

Not that you want to, or that you have the ability to do it, but it can be done. And originally, that was the only way to run Linux, because there was no such thing as a "distro".

ITS TIME..THIS IS AMERICA..SO MUCH... TO MUCH MONEY..ITS TIME MAKE YOURSELF SOME MONEY, NO SCAM! GUARANTEED MONEY! NO...

Understand what that means though. *YOU* have to go out and find source code for *everything* you want to run. All systems admin tools, all applications... *everything*. There are lots of options, because the various BSD project and the GNU project have generated freely available source for virtually anything you want in the way of tools and many applications, while others have devoted themselves to specific applications (otherwise, it you don't like what they do, you can write your own). But integrating all of that into a single functional system is a full time job if you are extremely able, and nearly impossible for one person to accomplish even then.

Some people clearly do like the idea of putting together their own system, using the Linux kernel as the basis. Virtually every Linux distribution is or started as such an project, and the people who did it have chosen to share what they have with everyone else, mostly because very few people have the ability to accomplish such a feat, much less the desire to continue doing it.
