No, "su -" inherits nothing. Whether firefox is running or not should make no difference to whether these files under ~user-.mozillacan be stat()ed or not. Something *weird* is going on here.

If you can't unlink() a thing, it's possible that the i attribute is set. lsattr this directory (and the files under it) and make sure the i attribute isn't set; if it is, chattr -i it. The thing is, attributes shouldn't make any difference to a file's behavior when you stat() it. Are you running SELinux, or using ACLs?

If I were you, I'd check the output from dmesg and make sure there aren't any warnings about bad blocks or filesystem errors. If there are, umounthome (or mount it read-only) and fsck it. I've seen behavior like this happening on a damaged filesystem once before.
