If you have been paying attention to the situation, his problem, which I had already experienced, was the combination of a SATA hard drive and the switch from 2.4 to 2.6 kernels. The suggestions you made would not work. The system has to be reconfigured to regard the hard drive as scsi rather than ide. In addition, the early 2.6 kernels he used would not recognize the SATA drive at all.

No, that is not what I said. What I said then, and repeat again, is that in this particular situation he is not faced with a standard kernel upgrade.

Huh?Ê I'm not sure I understand that. But to suggest to someone who is having trouble installing a pre-built kernel with a canned install script that it would be better to build the latest kernel from scratch is not helpful. In addition, had he done that, he would have gotten no further.

What I would expect him to do is to ask about it, and find someone who has gone through a similar situation.
