I presume that your default kernel is a 2.4 kernel. Are you saying that you cannot install, using a debian package, a newer 2.4 kernel and have it work? That is unlikely. However, depending on your hardware a 2.6 kernel may have trouble.

What do you mean by "installed manually"?

On my home machine, I had to do something IÊhave never done before; a complete re-install of the system; to go from a 2.4 kernel to a 2.6 one. For me, the problem was that I have a SATA hard drive, which the 2.4 kernels treat (with limitations) as an IDE drive. 2.6.12 and above kernels can deal with these as scsi devices, and disk access is much improved. But every reference in the configuration todev-hda* needs to be changed. Also, default 2.6.15 installs use udev - or at least etch does. It is possible to migrate the system, but in this case I found it easier to wipe out the old and start fresh.
