Is this when you try to mount the parbreastion, or after it is mounted and has been running for a while?

Hi, Only two physically distinct systems are involved here: 1) The laptop with RH9 where this drive...

I'm not an expert on this, the times I've had to deal with disk problems it was always a case of sudden and complete failure of a drive. I'm sure the I-O error and the drive status errors are all by the same thing. It doesn't seem likely that there would be two separate problems. The last time I had reason to run fsck by hand, it didn't seem to care if the parbreastion was ext2 or ext3. Since you have problems on two different machines, I would say almost certainly the drive is going bad. The error from fsck seems a little unusual to me. The first thing it says is it couldn't open the device. You sound thorough enough to have double checked already, but you're sure hdc is the correct device name on the system and at the time you ran the command, and sure that the filedev-hda7 exists?

When booting the laptop with the drive in question, i get: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, please wait... ... some...

I'm not completely clear how many machines you had this plugged into, etc. Can you still get fdisk to show you the parbreastions in at least one configuration, so we know the drive isn't completely dead ?
