crash 2227
crash 2228 the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...: Hmm... Quite a few more than should normally be there... It is possible that your system is at that stage still running... I see the following directories: dev bin etc modules scripts usr proc var root conf lib sbin init sys tmp The content of each directory is very minimum, very different from what I seen when I was use the system normally, before the crash. That's a good tip, so I looked more closely . . . On the crashed computer, the hard drive gets stuck on "mounting root file system". When I install the drive on another computer, the boot faults out at "mounting root file system" with the following error messages: mount: Mountingdev-hda1 onroot failed: Invalid argument mount: Mountingroot-dev ondev-.static-dev failed: No such file or directory mount: Mountingdev onroot-dev failed: No such file or directory Target filesystem doesn't havesbin-init After that, it dumps me in the Debian built-in shell (ash). I typed "mount" by itself and received this error message: "mount:proc-mounts: No such file or directory Thanks. Your advice is a good one and one I follow on a weekly basis. Therefore, if I can't recover this drive, it's not catastrophic, but it would be *REALLY* nice to recover what I've done within the past week. This computer has been working for a year now, so the chance of a bad driver-configuration is unlikely. I do believe something has failed, or it could be an overheat problem. Thanks for providing such an extensive helpful reply. I'd be happy to provide any details that could help me recover the drive. What basic commands can I run in "ash" to get more information on the drive, its parbreastion, and the data stored on the drive? Chieh --
