Turn automounting off. Mandrake uses something called "supermount" to do this. supermount can lead to reduced performance on hotpluggable devices, and automounters tend to cause more problems than they solve, so just get rid of the automounter.

This is weird. Typically, thedev-ide-hostX-busY-targetZ-lun0devices are the real device nodes, and compatability symlinks calleddev-hdc anddev-cdroms-cdrom0 that point to the real device node are created.

That's not going to work the way you expect if it's a symlink.

Um. Why are you running -scanbus when you've already specified the device with dev= ?

Dances With Crows Thx for your answer. Automount was off already and this is my supermount config looks like: config SUPERMOUNT tristate "Supermount removable media support" help Supermount gives you the...

No. Joerg's "device triplet naming scheme" doesn't *work* properly on anything that isn't a real SCSI device, so -scanbus will give inconsistent results or fail entirely on IDE devices. Just use "dev=-dev-hdX" , it works fine despite Joerg's unpleasant womaning.

Interesting. Are you running software RAID? Also, you should know that devfs has been deprecated and really shouldn't be used anymore. The new thing is udev, and it appears to work fine as a drop-in replacement for devfs on Gentoo. Don't know about Mandrake. Consult your distro's

ide-scsi emulation doesn't work properly in 2.6 series kernels and should not be used with them.

When does `write' return 180
Andrew Xue It is not silly. It depends on a coupla things. If you have much more than 1GBytes of ram, the write could return as soon as the data...
