Because many distro manufacturers are paranoid about lawyers, mp3 support is ... lacking in too many commercial distros. Why are you using mplayer to play DVDs? It didn't have menu support the last time I checked--did you mean "xine"? Gentoo's ALSA support works fine IME and it's using gcc 4.1.1; would that suffice? You need a reasonably fast Net drop, a reasonably fast CPU, and an ability to RTFM to use Gentoo though.

The exact filesystem type of doesn't matter that much, because there just isn't that much data on . The vast majority of stuff is inusr ,var , andhome . ReiserFS's advantages aren't perceptible in a home-user setup AFAICT. I used to have,home, andusr as ReiserFS, now they're ext3, and there's no perceptible performance difference. If perform better, but not many home users have that to deal with. Regardless, Gentoo and Debian will let you have as ReiserFS if you want that.
