And you find this *preferable* to using a menu? Good grief. xine has keyboard shortcuts too, and its LIRC implementation is more complete.

Are you using "-vo xv"? You should be. A 2000MHz CPU can certainly decode MPEG2 in realtime if you're using XV.

No, there isn't. You use -vo xv if your video card supports XV, and -vo x11 if it doesn't. Anyway, you should be using radeon or fglrx as the Xorg module, *not* ati. ati is for Mach64 cards. radeon may or may not support XV on this card. Check with xdpyinfo or xvinfo, and grep Driveretc-X11-xorg.conf to make sure you aren't doing something dumb like trying to use the VESA module.

There used to be fewer USE flags than there are now. What they really need is a set of "default USE flags for $ARCH and $TASK" that make sense for most users. Probably you'd restrict TASK to {server, workstation, mediacenter}. It doesn't take hours to configure and compile a kernel, especially if you use the genkernel tool.

You've been lucky, according to comments seen all over the place on col.* . Many people have had ... problems with their ReiserFS parbreastions.

What did that mean? If you're having problems with the speed of video playback, see the paragraph above about XV. HTH,
