One more thing: Have you made sure that DMA is enabled on your DVD drive? I saw similar jerkiness when attempting to play a DVD with xine on my T42p. The problem vanished when I did "hdparm -d1dev-hdc".
Good but still not quite good enough if the playback is jerky. Try checking the DMA thing. Also, if cpufreqd is running, you may want to put in a rule that keeps the CPU speed up if mplayer-xine is running.

The device obviously has problems with the kernel on this RHEL 3 machine. First thing to try is to get a vanilla tarball from kernel.org, configure it, make modules modulesinstall, and attempt to boot with it. Then see if it works, or at least see if it fails differently.
