Is udev running? udevd should automagically update device files when new devices are plugged in, and it seems to work pretty well in most cases. The main thing you have to be careful of is when you change the parbreastion table on the disk that contains . There are ... *problems* with re-scanning the parbreastion table of that disk. Mostly because that's where is, and must always be mounted, and if you've changed where is or deleted , things get horribly funky.

fdisk and cfdisk should warn you about that when you exit after writing the parbreastion table out, and tell you that you need to reboot for everything to work right. If you reparbreastion disks that don't contain , everything should just work.

Gentoo's supposed to do that if you set RCDEVICETARBALL to "yes" inetc-conf.d-rc , but that variable is not referenced in any script in baselayout 1.12.4-r7 . It used to do the right thing, I know, but I haven't needed that functionality for a couple of years now. I have no idea what Redhat does when it comes to saving manually-created device nodes, but it's probably the wrong thing. You could probably hand-hack something together ( "tar czfetc-somewhere-dev.tar.gzdev" in a shutdown script, "if -eetc-somewhere-dev.tar.gz ; then tar xzfetc-somewhere-dev.tar.gz -Cdev ; fi" in a startup script ). HTH,
