When a suggestion has particularly helped to solve something, saying Thank You also flags up to anyone with a similar problem who reads the thread later that this was significant in resolving your problem. It is also nice for the person who voluntarily gave up their own time to help you.
When a series of suggestions have helped to resolve your problem, a post summarising the points that helped and thanking all concerned would be useful to anyone who has a similar problem and reads the thread and again will be nice for the people who gave up their own time to help you.
99 times out of 100 the person helping is happy to help without thought for themselves. On that 1 occasion where the person might be down in the dumps and wonder "What's the use, no-one ever acknowledges my help" the fact that they were thanked earlier in the year might just spur them on to write that 100th article. -- Robert In the interest of greater transparency, my new sig follows:
