That's encouraging.

You are probably running into the problem of having 2 installs, one inusr and one inusr-local. The problem is that most software will install itself, by default, intousr-local...

kevincw01 It's an interesting idea, with the fascinating question of how to keep the system secure and ensure privacy. I think it's a solvable...

Yes, I did mean that. On the other hand, I recall from the old 0.97 kernel that there was a similator for the floating point coprocessor. I don't know if that counts.

I think I've demonstrated in my other postings how badly qualified I am to think about things like this, but I believe it is better to think than not. I've been reading Linux Device Drivers, 2d ed., and I learned from it that the kernel doesn't have floating point support and that one can't call user space libraries. I'm at peace with that. So, now I can think about how to change all the mallocs to kmallocs.

Unfortunately, gmp represents a lot of code to monkey with. It will probably be good for me to become familiar with it, if that is really possible. On the other hand, I've seen how experienced programmers seem to be able to walk into an immense software package and know just where to tweak it to get it to do something it was never intended to do. Maybe they really have to read the whole thing, but I suspect they have some other way of developing insights into it.

I'm not doing anything important, just thinking about things I'd like to try, if I ever develop more skills. If I ever get past the point of just dreaming, I'll post a follow up. -- Ignorantly, * Disclaimer: I am a guest and *not* a member of the MIT CSAIL.
