help I installed rpm4.0.6 and now nothing works! 66

Sidetracked by the holidays and haven't followed the thread closely -- just a quick scim.

I could not find any details about the rpm transistion problems -- ie., prerhaps the one's very specific to OP's problems -- but I did some more snooping in a few sparew moments and came up with these:

q version 4.0.4-6x.i386.rpm The developmental version at: ftp:--ftp.rpm.org-pub-rpm-dist-rpm-4.0.xis simply broken. Try fixed packages at: ftp:--people.redhat.com-jbj-rpm-4.0.4-6xeq Was it "really" fixed? ;-)

q ******* The real trick is to do a --rebuilddb immediately to insure that the db1 format is initially intact. The final --rebuilddb converts ******* There are rpm-4.0.4-6x.21 packages for Red Hat 6x at ftp:--people.redhat.com-jbj-rpm-4.0.4-6x

*Note* these no longer available at above site. The ones in the rpm.org repository incorparate the fixes? prg

Download popt-1.6.4-6x.21.i386.rpm rpm-4.0.4-6x.21.i386.rpm and do Ed: Next line was not in Jeff's original post, but is implicit cdvar-lib tar czvftmp-rpmdb.tar.gz rpm

rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0.4-6x.21.i386.rpm popt-1.6.4-6x.21.i386.rpm eq

Every rpm update includes a popt update as well. One can only imagine what mischief this might cause for the unsuspecting user and "legacy" apps ;-)

As near as I can tell -- my memory is too shot to rely on -- the rpm-4.0.2 packages were the first ones to directly address the conversion from rpm-3.X with a "common" (ie., backward compatible) version.

This was about the time I-we were converting to RH after using slack for years. The kids in the lab were using RH at home and on laptops and finally rebelled at working with two, such different, distros. I do remember some of the kids having conversion problems but details of symptoms, etc, escape me -- totally :-)
