help I installed rpm4.0.6 and now nothing works! 7268

Had it only been that simple, and we would all be doing that. Reading the docs first. Would it have helped to read the RH6.2 docs first? I don't know. I believe that at the time RH6.2 was released, and the docs were written, nobody knew about the problems that lay ahead wrt. the transitions to glibc2 or the new rpm db.

Perhaps the docs that came with rpm4? What docs? I can't remember I discovered much docs in that package.

Perhaps the lesson should be: Don't mix distributions without first giving due consideration to possible incompatibilities.

I think one must just develop a gut feeling for what sw is less likely to have strange interdependencies with everything else.

But even so, given my theory that the real trigger here was ldconfig, almost any installation at all could have caused this failure. The problem here being that the system was being maintained in some non-standard way by somebody else and you did not know about it.

But then, odds are still quite high that my theory is wrong!

It would be interesting to hear about it if you learn what actually went wrong.
