...so I *think* he wants to look at all the lines in all the files that differ. If my analysis is correct, diff3 is the tool he needs. "info diff3" for the full scoop; that utility's man page is not that helpful.

join only works on 2 files at once. I wouldn't use md5sum --check either, since that can take a long time if the files you're checking are large, and it's obvious that md5sum's already been run on the files. I don't understand why there are 3 files, but there is no "diff4" AFAICT, so if the OP wants to expand this scheme to 4 machines or repositories, he'll have to approach the problem a different way. Oh well, HTH,
