(Also, how'd you get the mouse working? I have an ATi Remote Wonder II, all the ordinary buttons are recognized by lirc and usable in xine, but the mouse doesn't seem to do anything.)

I think this should be OK, though there's an extra :1 at the end of the second line.

-audit 0 almost certainly means "disable auditing". I don't know exactly what it does as "man Xorg" doesn't list -audit as a valid option. Note that if you use the same Screen section in both Layouts, they'll both default to the same Mode. You said you wanted the second X instance to have a different Mode. I'm sure there's a way to do this, but I can't think of exactly how right now. HTH anyway,
