how turn dma option 'on' for kernel support

hi guys, im having this frustrating problem where i cant turn on the dma option..doing hdparm as root i get...

#hdparm -d1dev-hda

Hi I m new to the linux-unix world. I m facing a problem while i try to access internet on Fedora Core 4. I m using an ethernet LAN card...

i read somewhere that maybe the kernel has not been compiled with dma support..i even tried pasing ide0=dma in the grub boot menu..but it hasnt helped...
