I made some progress with that approach and discussed it in another thread, but basically I gave up on it when I realized that I would never be able to figure out how to compile a new version ofsbin-loader.c. It was interesting though.

somewhat delusional theory about how RH 6.2 got installed deleted Although RH 6.2 is installed on the machine, my theory of how I managed to do it doesn't have...

Meanwhile, I have succeeded in rehabilitating my disabled PC. I've been at this sporadically for a while and may not recall the essential events correctly, but I think they are: (1) It got disabled when I tried to upgrade from RH 7.1 to RH 9. (2) I was subsequently unable to reinstall RH 7.1. (3) It would not boot the RH 6.2 installation CD (4) I tried and failed to install Ubuntu (infinite loop during installation).

In an earlier message, I explained that attempting to upgrade from RH 7 to RH 9 had trashed my Linux parbreastion and rendered my PC unbootable. At the moment, I'm trying to...

Here is what finally worked this morning, after event (4): As an act of desperation, I used the RH 7.1 boot diskette, which I had made from the RH 7.1 installation CD, together with the RH 6.2 CD. At this moment, RH 6.2 is installed on the Linux parbreastions and the old DOS parbreastion is still there with all the programs it had on it and they work. LILO is working fine. I installed RH 6.2 without a desktop, so I seem to have no way or running X (at any rate, locate can't find startx), but I can always upgrade by adding a desktop and I can probably upgrade to RH 7.1.

At any rate, it is now a rehabilitated system. I might as well leave RH 6.2 on it for the moment, since I'm reading Linux Device Drivers. Having a variety of kernels will let me try out some of the things the book says about backward compatibility. -- Ignorantly, * Disclaimer: I am a guest and *not* a member of the MIT CSAIL.
