I have an old machine running RH 7. For a long time, whenever I mention any problem whatsoever on an old machine running RH 7, everyone tells me that I really ought to upgrade to a more recent linux. This morning, I slipped the first Fedora 2 installation CD into the CD ROM drive and the machine refused to boot from it, even though the bios is set to boot first from the CD ROM drive. I know it is sometimes possible to install from the DOS parbreastion, so I booted DOS and found that it could not detect the CD ROM drive. I tried A:, B:, C:, D:, ... Then I rebooted but this time I slipped in the first installation disk for RH 9, figuring I might at least be able to boot that. It did start to install. It didn't have enough RAM for a graphical installation, so it proceeded in text mode. It got to the point where it trashed my Linux parbreastion and THEN it told me that my machine it not supported by RH 9 and ended the installation. I removed the installation disk and tried to boot normally. It got as far as LI and then hung. installation problems 4305 The good ideas you are talking about came from Lenard, not from me. I'll take a look at it. I've been thinking it over and I'm starting to... Then I got the RH 7 installation CD hoping to restore the original RH 7. To my surprise, it refused to boot from the CD ROM drive. In the future, I'll ignore well intended advice to upgrade to a more contemporary Linux: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That matter of preference aside, I am somewhat astonished that Red Hat would come up with an installation procedure that in effect shoots first and asks questions later. I mean, trash the disk and THEN figure out that the machine isn't supported? I don't think I have a boot disk. Do I have to throw the machine away? I have a few more ideas of what to try: (1) swap the CD ROM drive for another one, just in case the source of the trouble is a flaky drive. Then try again with the installations. (2) See if it will book RH 6.2, which I also have. (3) Install Windows. (4) After Windows, trash Windows install RH 7 again. -- Ignorantly, * Disclaimer: I am a guest and *not* a member of the MIT CSAIL. My actions and * comments do not reflect in any way on MIT.
