RS232 serial modem.

I do this all of the time.

buttumes that the old-new machine are of a compatible bus type. I have a modem that started out being connected to a Stride 440 (a 68000-based machine -- predated PCs, including ALL PC busses -- XT, ISA, PCI, etc.). It moved to a '486 box (ISA), then to a P166 box, and now is on my K6-500 box. Modem still works and *still* in service. It is USR Courier 2400. Solid as a rock, if only 2400 BPS.

Tony Lawrence I have been running computers with internal modems since 1996 here at home. I have never had to shut...

Old external modems can be used to 'smarten up' dumb UPS systems -- they can be used as a 'cheap' power status monitor: plug the modem into the wall (not the UPS!) and connect to an available RS232 port. Monitor DTR -- so long as the modem has power, DTR will be live. When a power failure happens, the modem will drop DTR -- this can be detected by powerd (or I'm sure its successor) and a clean shutdown can occur. This makes them of possible value in some circles (where an internal modem would be of no value).
