And if you look at the Gentoo Installation Handbook, it can be boiled down to "Step 0: Boot from LiveCD. Steps 1-25: type these commands. Step 26: Reboot machine.", which isn't exactly quantum physics. If you do decide to try Gentoo, get the most recent LiveCD and do a Stage 3 install. There's not much point to a Stage 1 install; it just adds ~2 hours to the initial steps.
