Your last sentence doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Think of it this way: There are certain Java programs that care about which JRE they're running under. Orrible's installer was one back in 2000; it wouldn't run under a non-Sun JRE, it actually required a particular *version* of the Sun JRE, and it sucked in many other ways. ebuilds for binary packages exist for a number of other things (the evil nVidia kernel module+X server, OpenOffice, Firefox) for this and various other reasons. It takes a long time to compile OpenOffice, after all....

font rendering priority and fontconfig font override
hi everyone I was always confused by the order that X(Freetype? Xft?) renders a given symbol (encoded with...

You install a system in a couple of hours; you maintain it for years and installation. And if you look at the Gentoo Installation Handbook, it can be boiled down to "Step 0: Boot from LiveCD. Steps 1-25: type these commands. Step 26: Reboot machine.", which isn't exactly quantum physics.

If you do decide to try Gentoo, get the most recent LiveCD and do a Stage 3 install. There's not much point to a Stage 1 install; it just adds ~2 hours to the initial steps. You will also want something faster than dialup, as otherwise "emerge sync" and downloading the packages will take forever.
