I take it that you didn't bother reading anything about Linux programming before you did this, I wonder if you have any idea how dangerous that sort of approach could have been, not on Linux because you are protected, but on the programming environment you have come from (MS).

MIME and .desktop files 961
On Thursday 13 April 2006 08:31, NUPUL stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...: Not quite correct. A.desktopfile is no more or no less but a...

You haven't even done a simple tutorial because you would have then known what the x.o file was and what the next step to take was.

I am not going to answer those in a post, look on google for 'How to program for Linux tutorial'

Your MS developer suite did a lot of work for you so made programming easy, but from the other side of the argument your MS developer suite Hid a lot of what would have been usefull functionality, because MS didn't think you were bright enough to make use of them.

You now have Linux, which means you have the freedom to develop, before you can start though you need to learn about the OS itself, not great details but enough to know how to reference it, you also need to learn about the programming tools available to you. Compilers, linkers, cvs, program editors. Plus of cause the wealth of languages, you are no longer limited (or hearded some would say) to Vbasic or C# (which is just VB in a different coloured box to fool those coming from c++).

Many Linux people tend to have a favourite script language and if they do programming the same, or another, favourite programming language. For example, bash, perl, ruby and of cause python are great for scripts and very popular. Some of those can be extended to applications, but generally for serious application work you would use c++ or ada. However they are more available. Fortran still is highly reguarded by the number crunching programmers. Some wouldn't leave nasm for all the rice in china ....

You now have choices, but start with the links from 'How to program for Linux tutorial'
