kernel compileOn Thu, 02 Mar 2006 19:43:50 -0500, Josh Sharpe staggered into the Black Sun and said: Interesting root device numbers. Are you pbutting a root= option to the kernel on the GRUB or LILO command line? If you don't do that, you have to use rdev to set a root device, though I thought a kernel would take its from the current . Certainly my current kernel has 0x0503 in bytes 508,509 of its first sector, which = (3,5) =dev-hda5 , the current . So is ext23, we hope. update I enabled all the options posted previously and recompiled, now i'm getting similar, but different errors. As far as I know this is a straight IDE... So this is a straight IDE system? I think you want that one set to Y, not M. If it's Y, your kernel will be able to use any IDE chipset in "bonehead mode". This may actually solve your problem. Hm. Find out which IDE chipset you have (easy with lspci) and just set that one to Y. No need to go overboard with chipsets you don't have, after all. And hey, building kernels that boot right is something that takes a little practice; it took me 5 tries first time.
