What? Since the early 2.2 days (and probably a long time before that), the kernel and initrd have been separate enbreasties. What reason do you have for making them one enbreasty?

That seems insanely huge for an initrd. Did you put absolutely every module that exists in?

Your kernel is too big. I buttume you're using the x86 architecture, since you didn't say otherwise. "Real mode limitations on the x86" ring a bell?

If you meant "I want to build a compressed filesystem and mount it as , as is done on many LiveCDs", look into those LiveCDs. At least some of these LiveCDs have options for loading this compressed filesystem into RAM. Look at how they did that, and you should be able to replicate it.

You should also explain the problem you're trying to solve in a larger context. Are you trying to build a mini-distro that fits on a {CD, USB pen drive, ZIP disk, floppy} ? What does this mini-distro need to do?
