micro solution backpack cdwriter hell 3898On Mon, 13 Jun 2005 03:50:03 GMT, johnny bobby bee staggered into the Black Sun and said: You didn't mention what (if anything) you've tried wrt USB. USB is usually easier and faster than parport. Like so: modprobe uhcihcd (or ohcihcd, depending on your board's chipset--try both.) modprobe ehcihcd (if your board and drive are USB 2.0 capable) modprobe usb-storage ...and that should be all you need to do. Power drive on, plug drive in, make sure cdrecord -scanbus sees it, go to town. Manufacturer's websites are usually the last place to go for Linux support info. However, that one had accurate info on it. Meaning "cdrecord should work". Parport CD devices are bastard stepchildren, though, because they're too slow and too expensive. I've only run into 1 parport CD-RW, and that was in 2000. It worked fine for reading after I'd banged on it a bit, but I didn't have the chance to try it out for writing. micro solution backpack cdwriter hell 3899 Dances With Crows firstly, thank you for replying. it seems as though lately. all we're getting in here is a... Are lp, pcd, and pg loaded? You need to have all those modules loaded to do reading and writing with parport CD devices. (lp is almost always required for anything to do with the parport, though the documentation doesn't always make that clear.) pcd and pg should be loaded when you try to accessdev-pg0 (writing) ordev-pcd0 (reading) , but that may not be happening for some reason. OK, there were problems with cdrecord and kernels 2.6.89, but 2.6.10 has worked fine for me with IDE CD-RWs here. cdrecord -scanbus doesn't always find IDE devices, but since parport devices are mapped to a virtual SCSI bus, it should be able to find the device without any dev= option. Hmm, make sure scsimod is loaded... This is about the extent of my knowledge on parport CD-RWs.
