firstly, thank you for replying. it seems as though lately. all we're getting in here is a bunch of troll-baiting crap. i was about to give up on this group, and this drive.

On Wed, 15 Jun 2005 09:00:44 GMT, johnny bobby bee staggered into the Black Sun and said: ? I haven't noticed this. Well, I have Flatfish, Alan...

secondly, i've posted here about this problem before, specifically with the USB option, and didn't really get anything in the way of response. i've given up trying to get the external cd-writer to work with USB.

ohcihcd 19848 0 ehcihcd 29444 0 uhcihcd 30224 0 usbcore 107384 6 ohcihcd,ehcihcd,usbhid,uhcihcd,usbstorage

cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '-dev-pg*'. Cannot open SCSI driver. cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'. cdrecord: cdrecord: For more information, install the cdrtools-doc cdrecord: package and readusr-share-doc-cdrecord-README.ATAPI.setup .

tried to fire up k3b, gnomebaker and graveman ... neither could find a cd-writer device.

dmesg gives me some indication of activity though: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhcihcd and address 3 ohcihcd: 2004 Nov 08 USB 1.1 'Open' Host Controller (OHCI) Driver (PCI) pcd: pcd version 1.07, major 46, nice 0 pcd0: Autoprobe failed pcd: No CD-ROM drive found pcd: pcd version 1.07, major 46, nice 0 pcd0: Autoprobe failed pcd: No CD-ROM drive found pg: pg version 1.02, major 97 pga: Autoprobe failed pg: No ATAPI device detected

lp is loaded. but the other 2 are no go.

bane: Error inserting pcd (-lib-modules-2.6.10-5-386-kernel-drivers-block-paride-pcd.ko): Operation not permitted

bane: Error inserting pg (-lib-modules-2.6.10-5-386-kernel-drivers-block-paride-pg.ko): Operation not permitted

scsimod is loaded. from what i understand after pluging in a 'virtual SCSI' device, the kernel should create a device underdev-sda. i don't see anything there like that at all being created.

again - thanks for the help. if you have any other suggestions, please do fire away. i've almost given up trying to get this drive to work with linux. i guess i may have to keep windows around just for cd burning. real shame, though.
