SOLVED!

Smallest Linux to got internet and Office
Now comes the "canned" speech about what's wrong with GG posting. It's offered as a learning tool, to help you get more, and better help, without...

THANK YOU folks - to all whom have helped - I now have a working swap-FILE;-)

It appears KDE and Konquerer do not like it though -- they are sluggish as all heck (just a *tad* more than without the swap, or perhaps it's my imagination), when typing into this darn-dang google groups box (will be on real mail soon I hope, once I iron out this faulty setup)... I still have about 17MB 'physical' RAM free - I know it ain't much, but still...oh well; Epiphany seems like a nicely made, fast GNOME (Mozilla based) browser - just lacking in a "few" features I need. That's for another thread for sure ;-)

~$ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 192264 175208 17056 0 11324 98872 --+ buffers-cache: 65012 127252 Swap: 131064 0 131064

Anyway - directly after the reboot - I have this; # catproc-swaps Filename Type Size Used Priorityvar-tmp-swap file 131064 0 32500

so - it is definitely working (as 'free' shows as well)

I guess the 'priority' option is ONLY useful if using the 'swapon -a' or similar command in anetc-rc script;

# $ man swapon ..... -p priority Specify priority for swapon. This option is only available if swapon was compiled under and is used under a 1.3.2 or later kernel. priority is a value between 0 and 32767. Higher numbers indicate higher priority. See swapon(2) for a full description of swap priorities. Add pri=value to the option field of etc-fstab for use with swapon -a. .......

Keith Keller done... I'll have to play with that more I guess. My distro is Debian Sarge; ~$ uname -a Linux localhost 2.4.27-2-386 #1 Wed Aug 17 09:33:35...

what the heck - I'll leave it there anyway.

Oh - here's the winning; # catetc-fstab

proc proc proc defaults 0 0dev-hda3 ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1var-tmp-swap swap swap pri=32500 0 0dev-hdc media-cdrom0 iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0dev-hdb media-cdrom1 iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0dev-fd0 media-floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

OK Folks - that about does it for this session -- Thanks again everyone

(If anyone wants to follow up questions-suggestions -- please do, feel free -- but let's not use the modified solved! breastle ?). I'm a bit unclear of the netiquette on that -- and since I'm using this *painfully* contorted, broken, malnoursihed GG interface - I'm not sure how the "Add followup to" header would work either.
