mplayer vs mplayer plugin

Using Ubuntu breezy 5.10 (not dapper yet) mozilla-mplayer 3.17-1ubuntu1~breezy1 mplayer-386 1.0-pre7cvs20050716-0.1ubuntu9

I don't really care about getting the latest and greatest version of mplayer, but i do have all the codecs.

Not really a big deal, just curious why this happens. Some streaming video for realplayer will play in firefox with the mplayer plugin, but not from the commandline with mplayer. Why would this be?
