On Fri, 06 Jan 2006 07:50:24 -0800, CAPSKOV If you want to play games you'll have to...

Run the command "vmstat 5", and let it run. Do some browsing. When you think the computer is slow, go back to the terminal window with vmstat, and hit Ctrl-C. Now look at the the columns "Swap si, so" (Two columns). If they are not mostly zero, you have too little ram.

Low "Free" numbers is not so significant if there is sizeable "Cache" values, as the latter just holds copies of disk blocks, in case they are needed again. Such pages will be repurposed any time more memory is needed for something else.

Look at the rightmost column, cpu-wa. If this is any significant value (the range is 0-100), you are being delayed by disk io. If you also have swapping activity, this contributes to (dominates?) this delay. Get more ram. If you don't have swap activity, you may need faster disk, or more disks - plural. Not just more disk space, but more disks, and some plan to make the system use them in parallel, and avoid disk head movements across the disks.

Try the command "top". The output is sorted according to the column next column to the right, "%mem" becomes the sorting column. The screen is updated every 3 seconds; after the next update, hit 'q'.

Look at the top memory-consuming applications. Consider closing applications with high "Res" numbers. "m" suffix means megabytes. (But if you have multiple "spamd" processes with large Res values, the numbers do not necessarily add. Most of the pages may be shared.)

Then start ethereal. (If you don't have it - install it.) In the "Capture" menu, select "Interfaces". Locate the interface that carries the internet connection. Probably "ppp0", or possibly "eth0". "Prepare". Uncheck "Promiscuous mode". Uncheck all three "Name resolution" boxes. Uncheck "Update list of packets" and "Automatic scrolling in live capture", but do check "Hide capture info dialog". Click "Start" at the bottom.

I've just begun working with Wine myself to help adapt VB software to Linux, because I also want to leave Windows. I'm getting a big kick...

Do some web browsing. Look up sites that in your experience are slow, and some that are not, if any. Go back to ethereal, and hit the stop button, the fourth from the left, with a network card with red circle with a white X. This stops the capture.

Find a line that goes to, or comes from a web site. right-click it, and select "follow tcp stream". Then all unrelated packages are temporarily hidden, so you see just datagrams related to just that connection. Now look at the time column. Look at the time between Your computer sends a datagram and the servers sends the next. Also check the other way. On the right side, look at "Win" values. Low or zero win values means the sender of that datagram is busy, and does not want more data for a while. Is it your PC that is throttling the server? Clear the filter at the top to get back all the hidden messages, and look for name server packages. How long is your computer waiting for responses to name queries?
